Which Washing Detergent Can I Use On Cloth Nappies?

Wondering which detergent you can use on your cloth nappies?
Well we have scoured the globe and come up with an extensive list of brands you can and can't use on Real Nappies cloth nappies. The good news is as Real Nappies cotton prefolds are 100% cotton they are built to last and extremely easy to look after, even our covers go through the rigours of industrial washing every day at Waitakere Hospital Maternity Unit. You can boil wash the nappies and covers and then pop them in the machine on hot dry and on top of this use they are guaranteed to work through 2 kids - wow!
There are however a few harsh ingredients we recommend not using with Real Nappies products:
- Whitening enzymes (help dissolve stains but can cause skin reactions on sensitive babies)
- Whiteners and Brightners (tiny particles that remain on your clothes making them seem brighter after washing. These are not necessary and may cause skin irritation)
- Fragrances and Dyes (Unnecessary chemicals for babies’ laundry)
- Bleach (harsh chemical against babies’ delicate skin)
- Fabric softener (leaves a residue on your nappies and will cause them to be less absorbent)
The great news is that with some home-brand or cheaper washing powders they do not use so many additives to keep the cost down, which means they may be OK to use with Real Nappies cloth nappies - therefore saving even more money!
| We prefer powders as then you avoid the additives that they have to add to keep it in a liquid form.
DO NOT use too much detergent, we recommend about ¼ of the recommended amount.
